Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) delivered a sharp rebuke of his own party this week, using a Wednesday night appearance on Fox News’s Hannity to criticize Democrats he believes are pulling the party further to the left and to single out the party’s Senate nominee in Maine.
Speaking with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Fetterman discussed the direction of the Democratic Party, the growing influence of democratic socialists, and what he described as troubling candidates seeking higher office.
Among the strongest remarks came when Fetterman targeted Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine. The race is considered a critical contest for Democrats as they seek to regain control of the U.S. Senate.
“And then, of course, you have the king of the dirtbags of P Diddy up in Maine,” Fetterman said. He went on to reference allegations involving Platner, saying the candidate had been accused of roughing up former girlfriends and had spent a decade on the social media platform Kik, which Fetterman noted has been described as a “predator’s paradise.”
“So, you know, as a Democrat, it’s entirely appropriate to just call that out,” Fetterman said, arguing that members of his own party should be willing to condemn behavior they find unacceptable rather than ignore it for political reasons.
After criticizing Platner, Fetterman shifted his attention to other Democratic candidates whom he praised as examples of what he considers mainstream Democrats.
He cited Jon Ossoff, Sherrod Brown, James Talarico, and Roy Cooper as candidates he described favorably.
“You’re not going to see me criticize or go after—we have some great, great candidates,” Fetterman said. Referring to Talarico, he added, “He’s a nice guy, no matter what anybody would say.”
The Pennsylvania senator then questioned why some Democrats have failed to more forcefully reject extreme political rhetoric within their own ranks.
“Why can’t you just push back and say, ‘These are abhorrent beliefs,’” Fetterman asked before specifically mentioning “communism” and “socialism” as ideologies he believes should be rejected.
Fetterman has frequently broken with fellow Democrats on several high-profile issues, particularly regarding Israel and criticism of the party’s progressive wing. He has repeatedly expressed concern that parts of the far left have become increasingly anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, and anti-capitalist.
During the interview, Fetterman also reiterated what he described as the one issue that could drive him to leave the Democratic Party altogether.
The senator said he would walk away if the Democratic Party officially embraced an anti-Israel platform that denied Israel’s “right to defend itself and to exist.”
According to Fetterman, crossing that line would be the one development that would convince him he could no longer remain a member of the Democratic Party.
