Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) reportedly received support from Elon Musk on Monday, as the House’s top Republican endeavors to garner backing prior to the Speaker vote on Friday.
The tech mogul’s vote of confidence was preceded by President-elect Trump’s “Complete & Total” endorsement of Johnson earlier in the day.
Johnson’s pursuit of maintaining his Speakership with a slim majority may be contingent upon the support of Trump and Musk.
After a tumultuous, last-minute attempt to enact government funding earlier this month, Johnson’s control of the House was called into question.
Musk, who launched a daylong crusade against the deal on X, in part torpedoed his initial end-of-year funding package by sharing or posting misinformation about the measure.
Johnson was compelled to negotiate a new agreement to prevent a government shutdown after Trump also expressed his opposition to the measure.
This agreement was able to satisfy both the president-elect and the billionaire, who has become one of Trump’s most trusted allies.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) declared his opposition to Johnson in the forthcoming Speaker vote subsequent to the initial funding proposal.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) are among the numerous hard-line conservatives who have not yet pledged their support for Johnson.
Nevertheless, Trump expressed his endorsement of Johnson at the conclusion of an extended Truth Social post on Monday.
LETS NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN. The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration.” Trump stated.
