National Guard members were seen patrolling the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool over the weekend as the Trump administration blamed vandalism for damage to the recently renovated landmark, even as questions continued to swirl over whether the problems were caused by sabotage, rushed work, or basic maintenance failures.

Video posted online showed Guard personnel walking near the pool and Lincoln Memorial as visitors moved through the area. The deployment came after President Donald Trump accused vandals of damaging the site and said repair work would begin “immediately.”

The Reflecting Pool had just undergone a costly spring renovation ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The project included draining the 2,000-foot pool, resurfacing it with a new blue coating, and refilling it in time for summer events. The work reportedly cost more than $16 million.

In a Truth Social post, the president said the Reflecting Pool had been “Vandalized” and claimed it had suffered a long gash, chemical contamination, and damage to nearby grass. Trump initially referred to a 250-foot cut, then later described it as a 300-foot gash. He also pointed to a large “86 47” marking allegedly carved into grass on the National Mall, a phrase critics have interpreted as anti-Trump shorthand.

Trump warned that destroying or attempting to destroy such property could bring a 10-year prison sentence and said the law would be “fully enforced.”

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro also took a hard line, warning that anyone caught damaging the pool would face prosecution. She said people adding products to the water that could trigger algae growth could face more serious charges.

According to reports citing an administration official, five people had been arrested, five others had received federal citations, and 14 police reports had been filed in connection with the Reflecting Pool problems.

For now, the Reflecting Pool has become both a repair job and a political symbol. The administration says vandals attacked a restored national landmark in a fit of anti-Trump rage, which shouldn’t be surprising. A recent poll showed that most Democrats dislike America.
