During a recent appearance on Fox News Sunday, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) reportedly discussed his trip to El Salvador, where he met Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an undocumented immigrant embroiled in a contentious deportation case.
The case has sparked political debate, particularly as the Trump administration has ignored court orders regarding Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S., raising concerns about due process for deported migrants.
When asked by host Shannon Bream if he inquired about Abrego Garcia’s alleged connections to the MS-13 gang, Van Hollen explained that he did not directly ask.
Instead, he focused on ensuring Abrego Garcia’s well-being and understanding his story.
He emphasized that the legal proceedings have already addressed the gang affiliation claims, and he urged the Trump administration to provide concrete evidence if they assert such ties.
Van Hollen stressed that while he is advocating for Abrego Garcia’s rights, he is not vouching for the individual himself.
He pointed out that a recent federal judge found no evidence linking Abrego Garcia to MS-13 or criminal activities, questioning why the administration has not presented evidence in court.
The senator acknowledged the tragic experiences of families affected by violence, including the mother of a murder victim, Rachel Moran.
He expressed empathy for families like hers but maintained that Abrego Garcia’s situation is separate.
Van Hollen reiterated his commitment to due process and the rule of law, stating that if Abrego Garcia is allowed back into the U.S. and is found to have violated laws, he would support deportation.
Ultimately, Van Hollen advocates for protecting constitutional rights, emphasizing that undermining one person’s rights endangers everyone’s rights in America.
