Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, reportedly recently disclosed that he was approached to join President Donald Trump’s Commerce Department.
Portnoy revealed this during a conversation with Fox Business host Stuart Varney, stating that he was asked to consider a position within the department.
While Portnoy did not specify the exact role he was offered, he expressed surprise at the proposition, noting that his background is primarily in sports media and entertainment.
Despite the unexpected nature of the offer, Portnoy acknowledged the potential impact such a position could have on his career and the broader business community.
“I got asked to be — and they didn’t follow through — [to work for] the Secretary of Commerce for Trump’s department, to work under. They asked me that and they said a condition would be I can’t run Barstool Sports. Do you have somebody who could run it? Now, I don’t know if it was serious if I said yes, but if you’re running a company, it’s tough to also run the government, it would seem, so I do think it’s a very fair question to ask [Musk], what are you doing for Tesla?” Portnoy said.
This revelation comes amidst Portnoy’s increasing involvement in political discourse. He has conducted high-profile interviews with political figures, including President Trump, and has been vocal about various policy issues affecting businesses and the economy.
Portnoy’s candidness about the offer highlights the intersection between media personalities and political appointments, raising questions about the criteria and considerations involved in such recruitment processes.
As of now, Portnoy has not indicated whether he is seriously contemplating the opportunity or if further discussions with the administration are planned.
The potential inclusion of a media entrepreneur like Portnoy in a governmental role reflects the administration’s interest in diverse perspectives from various industries.
It remains to be seen how this development will unfold and what implications it may have for both Barstool Sports and the Commerce Department.
