The Chinese government is now reportedly ramping up its response to the escalating trade war with the United States by cautioning its citizens against travel to the U.S.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued a travel advisory, highlighting the “deterioration of China-U.S. economic and trade relations” and the current domestic security situation in the United States.

This warning comes as the economic fallout from the trade war intensifies, with Chinese tourists previously contributing approximately $20.2 billion to American service exports in 2023.

In its statement, the ministry urged citizens to fully evaluate the risks associated with traveling to the U.S., echoing similar warnings issued during past trade tensions between the two nations.

This latest advisory aligns with a significant economic retaliation from China, which has imposed an 84% tariff on American goods in response to President Donald Trump’s recent enactment of a 104% tariff on Chinese products.

Amid these developments, Trump remarked that while China “wants to make a deal,” the nation has yet to understand how to initiate the dialogue effectively.

After China’s retaliation to his “Liberation Day” tariffs, Trump deployed an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, further escalating the trade tensions.

The White House has stated that China’s decision to retaliate was a miscalculation. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized China as the “worst offenders” in the global economy, arguing that such escalation ultimately harms their interests.

As the Trump administration plans to pursue trade agreements with various countries, including priority talks with Japan and South Korea, the implications of these tariffs are broadening, potentially impacting international relations and trade dynamics well beyond the U.S.-China context.
