U.S. Capitol Police swiftly arrested an individual Tuesday afternoon who appeared to be carrying a firearm near the entrance to the U.S. Capitol Building, prompting an immediate security alert to congressional offices and the public.

In a message sent to Capitol Hill staff and posted on X, U.S. Capitol Police confirmed the arrest.

“Our officers just arrested a person with what appears to be a gun near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building,” the alert stated. “Please avoid the area. We will provide more information when new information is confirmed.”

Roughly 20 minutes later, Capitol Police issued an update, reassuring lawmakers and the public that there was no indication of a broader threat.

“At this time, there does not appear to be any other suspects or ongoing threat,” the department said. “Out of an abundance of caution, please continue to stay away from the area while we investigate and collect evidence. Again, at this time, one person is in custody.”

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time. Authorities have not yet released details about the identity of the individual or the circumstances leading up to the arrest.

Firearms and a range of other items are strictly prohibited on Capitol Grounds. According to information posted on the Capitol Police website, even legally registered firearms are not permitted.

“Even if you have a firearm that is legally registered in another state or the District of Columbia, it is still illegal to bring it onto Capitol Grounds,” the website states. The ban also extends to explosives, drones and other restricted items.

Veteran congressional reporter Jamie Dupree shared a photo on X showing a visible police presence at the scene, including several officers and yellow caution tape. “View from the Capitol where police arrested a man with a gun,” Dupree wrote alongside the image.

Local media reported temporary road closures as law enforcement secured the area. Fox 5 in Washington, D.C., said Maryland Avenue was closed between First and Third Streets while officers conducted their investigation.

The arrest comes just two weeks after Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison for his attempted assassination of President Donald Trump during the lead-up to the 2024 election — a reminder of the heightened security environment surrounding federal officials and institutions.

Capitol Police emphasized that there is no ongoing threat at this time, but the incident underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement treats potential security breaches near one of the nation’s most heavily protected buildings.

As investigators continue to collect evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the arrest, officials are urging members of the public and congressional staff to avoid the area until further notice. More details are expected once authorities complete their initial assessment.
