Ontario Premier Doug Ford has now reportedly threatened to cut off energy supplies to the United States in response to recent tariffs imposed by President Trump.
These tariffs include a significant 25 percent levy on Canadian goods and a 10 percent tariff specifically on Canadian energy.
Ford expressed his determination to retaliate against these measures, stating that he would do whatever it takes to demonstrate to Trump that such actions are misguided.
In a bold statement, Ford declared, “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything – including cut off their energy, with a smile on my face.”
Canada is the largest source of energy for the U.S., supplying crude oil and other petroleum products, as well as natural gas and electricity.
The proposed tariffs are expected to drive up domestic energy prices, particularly affecting states in the Midwest.
Experts predict that gas prices could increase by 20 to 40 cents per gallon in the coming days, particularly in regions dependent on Canadian oil refineries.
Ford’s remarks have sparked discussions among other Canadian leaders, with some suggesting similar retaliatory measures. Quebec’s Premier, François Legault, has also indicated support for energy-related responses to the tariffs.
In addition to energy cuts, Ford plans to remove American alcohol from Ontario shelves and cancel contracts with U.S. companies like Starlink.
He criticized Trump for attacking Canada, stating that the tariffs are effectively a tax on American consumers.
The tensions between the two countries are escalating, with Ford urging unity among Canadian provinces to stand against these trade challenges. As the situation develops, both sides are bracing for potential economic repercussions from this ongoing trade dispute.
