Republican Florida Representative Byron Donalds reportedly issued a stern warning to his party regarding the upcoming budget package, stating that it will not pass unless it includes $1.5 trillion in spending cuts.
In a recent appearance on “Mornings with Maria,” Donalds emphasized that Republican “budget hawks” are steadfast in their demand for these cuts, highlighting their commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Following a House resolution passed largely along party lines, Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed their commitment to achieving the necessary cuts to align with crucial portions of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Donalds insisted, “If $1.5 trillion is not the cut line coming out of the House, that bill is not going to pass,” stressing the critical need for substantial mandatory spending cuts to ensure the country’s future economic health.
He clarified that while Social Security is off the table for cuts under the budget reconciliation process, there are significant areas for potential savings, particularly in Medicaid, where waste and fraud could amount to around $600 billion.
Additionally, he pointed to the Inflation Reduction Act tax credits and other related expenditures, which could potentially bring about $700 billion in cuts.
Despite the commitments from Johnson and Thune appearing to placate some Republican skeptics, concerns remain.
Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed doubt about the Senate’s ability to deliver the necessary cuts, indicating possible fractures within the party as they approach the budget negotiations.
Without the required reductions, the reconciliation package faces significant hurdles in Congress.
