British authorities have charged a 28-year-old man with the murder of conservative activist and former Conservative Party cabinet minister Ann Widdecombe, as investigators continue examining whether politics played a role in the killing.
Joshua Kerry was formally charged with murder Monday after spending a week in police custody. He appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 21, in connection with the case.
Widdecombe was found dead at her home on July 9, one day after suffering a fatal attack that left her with a severe head wound. Authorities later described the killing as a “targeted attack,” while emphasizing that the investigation into the suspect’s motive remains ongoing.
According to court proceedings reported by The Independent, Kerry allegedly entered Widdecombe’s home through the front door while she was eating lunch. Prosecutors allege that after asking for her “bank cards and ID,” he struck the elderly woman on the head 21 times with a hammer.
Police arrested Kerry on July 11 in South Yorkshire, more than 250 miles from Widdecombe’s home in Devon.
The murder has drawn widespread attention across the United Kingdom, particularly among conservatives who remembered Widdecombe as a longtime public servant and outspoken political figure.
Reform UK leader and Member of Parliament Nigel Farage, a longtime friend and political ally of Widdecombe, reacted to the murder charge by describing Kerry as “an intolerant individual obsessed with Soviet communism.”
In an opinion article published Monday in The Sun, Farage said he had received information indicating the suspect was a “hard-Left activist.”
“I have it on good authority that the murder suspect was a hard-Left activist,” Farage wrote. “He attended various marches and hated anyone with an opposing view. He had expressed his hatred of me on more than one occasion.”
Authorities have not confirmed those claims, and investigators have said their inquiry into the suspect’s motives remains active.
Laurence Taylor, head of Britain’s counter-terrorism police, said investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s motivations as well as any broader activity that may be connected to the case.
“I want to make it very clear that our investigation into this individual, determining his motivations and any wider activity he may have been involved in is continuing,” Taylor said in a statement reported by The Associated Press.
According to police, detectives have opened more than 800 lines of inquiry as they work to determine why Widdecombe was targeted.
“Given Ann Widdecombe’s profile and the targeted nature of the attack, determining the motivation, including any possible political motivation, remains an active avenue of investigation for our detectives,” Taylor said. “As with all murder investigations, understanding the why is a key part of our inquiries.”
Farage noted that during the early stages of the investigation he traveled to Widdecombe’s home in Devon to pay his respects. At the time, he publicly stated that he believed the killing had been premeditated, even before police officially characterized it as a targeted attack.
Farage later wrote that Taylor revealed investigators had uncovered evidence of planning and preparation.
“It was premeditated,” Farage wrote. “And it was targeted.”
Widdecombe served as a Conservative Party cabinet minister before later becoming a spokeswoman for Farage’s Reform UK party. She was also widely known for her outspoken Christian faith.
As Farage wrote, “She fought for Brexit when it was unfashionable, defended Christian values, championed animal welfare and stood up for victims of crime.”
According to The Independent, Kerry is scheduled to return to court for a case management hearing on Oct. 9, followed by a trial preparation hearing in November. A provisional trial date has been set for June 8, 2027.
