Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly unloaded on his own party this week, arguing that Republicans have become “almost as bad” as Democrats when it comes to selling the federal government as the answer to the country’s problems, rather than pushing Americans to roll up their sleeves and solve issues themselves.
Appearing on NewsNation, O’Reilly argued that the country, and the GOP specifically, desperately needs to rediscover an emphasis on the individual American. He pointed to the post-World War II generation, including his own father, who worked tirelessly to buy homes and build better lives without relying on government handouts. According to O’Reilly, today’s politicians on both sides have abandoned that ethic in favor of hollow promises about what government can do for people, and he says that mentality needs to be tossed out immediately.
O’Reilly said if the country returned to that after-World War II mindset, many of today’s social problems simply wouldn’t exist, arguing that’s exactly the message Republicans should be selling instead of edging closer to Democrat-style government dependency rhetoric.
The comments followed remarks O’Reilly made just a day earlier warning that Republicans, including President Trump, have a real problem brewing in Texas, citing how GOP candidate Ken Paxton is polling against Democrat James Talarico in the state’s closely watched race.
During the same NewsNation appearance, host Leland Vittert pushed back, noting that Democrats are the only ones actively talking about Americans who feel left behind, and asked how Republicans could be so blind to that sentiment.
O’Reilly dismissed the framing, arguing that Democrats’ talk of “affordability” is little more than lip service, pointing out that the same politicians never bring up affordability struggles in deep-blue states like California, which Democrats have controlled from top to bottom for years. He argued there’s no evidence of improved affordability there, calling the entire narrative a bunch of nonsense and insisting government isn’t going to hand anyone the resources to live a good life. According to O’Reilly, it’s on individual Americans to build that life themselves.
The blunt assessment adds O’Reilly’s voice to a growing chorus of conservative commentators warning that the GOP risks losing its core message of personal responsibility and limited government if it continues chasing Democrat-style promises heading into future elections.
