Liberal comedian Bill Maher reportedly recently shared his reasons for accepting an invitation from former President Donald Trump for a private dinner at the White House.

During an interview with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation, Maher explained that he believes the dinner could serve as an opportunity to bridge the political divide in the country.

“Maybe this is a beginning to heal America,” Maher remarked, clarifying that he does not think he has the power to single-handedly heal the nation.

However, he noted that bringing together two individuals who have been at odds for so long could offer a chance for constructive dialogue, likening it to the historic Nixon-to-China moment.

Maher acknowledged his credentials for accepting the invitation, stating that he has been critical of Trump and foresaw his reluctance to leave office.

He expressed confidence that he is respected for his honesty regarding the challenges of political correctness, despite losing some fans in the process.

He also reflected on the honor of being invited to the White House, regardless of the sitting president. “I’m impressed the f*** out of it,” he said, expressing excitement about the opportunity to have a conversation face-to-face instead of “shouting from 3,000 miles away.”

While Maher humorously noted that he wouldn’t be leaving the dinner wearing a MAGA hat, he emphasized the importance of trying to engage in dialogue, even if the outcome may be minimal.

Ultimately, Maher sees this dinner as a chance to attempt to talk through differences instead of allowing them to fester, showcasing his willingness to step outside of partisan lines for the greater good.
