A man carrying a gun was arrested Monday after driving up to a security barricade outside the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., prompting a swift response from law enforcement and a temporary closure of the area as investigators worked to determine what happened.
According to a statement obtained by Newsweek, the incident occurred at the north barricade of the Capitol, where officers with the U.S. Capitol Police took the suspect into custody.
Following the arrest, a significant police presence gathered around the scene. Multiple emergency vehicles were seen surrounding a gray Ford Bronco near the barricade as officers secured the area and began their investigation.

In its statement, the U.S. Capitol Police emphasized that firearms are not permitted on Capitol Grounds and confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
“Firearms are prohibited on Capitol Grounds,” a Capitol Police spokesperson said.
As a result of the incident, officials closed the North Barricade while investigators processed the scene and gathered additional information.

Investigators are now working to determine both the suspect’s intentions and the circumstances surrounding his arrival at the Capitol.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” the spokesperson said.
The arrest unfolded outside one of the nation’s most heavily secured government buildings, where Capitol Police maintain a constant security presence. Officers responded after the vehicle approached the north barricade, bringing the situation under control without further details being immediately released.
Witnesses at the scene observed numerous emergency vehicles responding to the location, with law enforcement surrounding the gray Ford Bronco as the investigation got underway. The closure of the North Barricade remained in effect while investigators continued examining the scene and gathering evidence. Authorities have indicated they are focused on determining why the individual drove to the Capitol and whether any additional factors played a role in the incident.
For now, Capitol Police have released only limited information as the investigation continues. Officials reiterated that firearms are prohibited on Capitol Grounds and said detectives are actively working to establish the facts surrounding Monday’s arrest.
