Thursday, former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois expressed his “huge desire” to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in their upcoming Texas primary.
“I would love to run against Ted Cruz,” Kinzinger said during an appearance on a recent podcast.
Despite Kinzinger’s desire to challenge Cruz, he stated that such a matchup is not imminent.
“I would like to, but right now, I’m not in a position to. I’ve got a young kid. I’ve got to kind of come down from the last couple of years. But if there’s a moment that comes along and the timing is right, yeah, absolutely.” he continued.
In his overwhelmingly Trump-voting district, the former Illinois congressman decided not to pursue reelection in 2022, a quest that would have been extremely difficult to achieve given his unpopularity within the Republican party.
Kinzinger, apart from his vote to impeach former President Trump, was a member of the committee that examined the Jan. 6 Capitol disturbance and conducted public prime-time hearings featuring testimony from key witnesses in the events.
