A $14.3 billion aid package for Israel was revealed by House Republicans on Monday as a show of support for the beleaguered American ally in its fight against Hamas.
But a crucial provision in the package that will probably prove unpopular with Democrats is the $14.3 billion in funding reductions for the Internal Revenue Service in order to pay for the overseas aid.
Funds contained in the Democrats’ comprehensive tax, health, and climate measure, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, which was passed into law last year, will be impacted by the changes.
Additionally, the package departs from the White House’s plan to include funding for both Israel and Ukraine in a single piece of legislation, which may make it much harder to pass the bill.
The Iron Dome and David’s Sling defense systems in Israel will get $4 billion from the law, and an additional $1.2 billion will go toward developing the Iron Beam defensive system.
One of the first legislative packages filed by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who took over as Speaker last week following the tumultuous debate over the replacement of outgoing Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
The legislation will be discussed by the House Rules Committee on Wednesday.
Legislators from both houses have stressed how critical it is to stand with Israel in its conflict with Hamas.
The House enacted its first piece of legislation under Speaker Johnson’s leadership last week when it passed a resolution strongly endorsing Israel and denouncing Hamas.
