A recent poll has now reportedly found that more than half of Republicans view former President Donald Trump as a person of faith, a higher percentage than those who said the same of more outspokenly religious politicians such as former Vice President Mike Pence and Utah Senator Mitt Romney.
53 percent of Republican voters believe that Donald Trump is a religious individual, placing him in first place.
Pence, an evangelical Christian, followed closely behind, garnering 52 percent in the poll.
Trump has consistently gained the support of social conservatives, and the poll results may provide insight into why the public perceives him that way in spite of a colorful personal history
Social conservatives have benefited from Trump’s policies on a number of hot button issues, including abortion.
Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices who all supported the majority opinion overturning the Roe v. Wade decision, which had been a goal of social conservatives for decades.
In addition many conservative evangelicals believe that Trump is a bulwark against the threat of the far-left, who are consistently perceived as opposing religious liberty.
The poll was conducted by HarrisX from September 8 to September 11 among 1,000 registered electors and has a margin of error of 3.1%.
