Rep. Dean Phillips (Minn.) reportedly hinted this weekend in an interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he had no intention of running against President Biden for the Democratic nomination for president in 2024.
Phillips restated his concerns about the old ages of both Biden and former President Trump, who is the front-runner in the 2024 GOP primary, and continued to say that he would still push people to run against Biden in the primary.
“Setting up a competitive campaign, the infrastructure, the people, the systems in multi-states, requires a tremendous amount of effort and time, and there are people who have laid that groundwork. I’m not one of them. Perhaps in the future. We’ll see about that.” Phillips said.
“My candidacy is very unlikely to be part of this. But I’ve used the moment and the spotlight that came with my call to action to encourage others.” he continued.
Phillips then announced that if President Biden secured the Democratic nomination “I will do everything I can to ensure he is re-elected despite my concerns, because they don’t even come close to the concerns that I have about his likely opponent.”
The congressman from Minnesota refuted any claims that he was trying to raise his own Democratic profile by calling for new leadership.
With recent appearances on Sunday morning talk shows and interviews in prestigious news sites, Phillips has raised speculation about a potential 2024 presidential bid.
