According to a resolution that was presented by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on Friday, the Republican from Florida is now reportedly aiming to condemn and investigate the sitting judge who is managing one of the court cases involving the former president Donald Trump.
The United States District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is in charge of the case relating the former president’s alleged efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 election and his suspected role in the riot on January 6 at the Capitol, is the subject of the resolution to reprimand the judge. Gaetz asserted that the judge has an obvious prejudice towards Trump.
In the resolution, Chutkan’s gifts to former President Barack Obama, who appointed her to the court, as well as her alleged support for Black Lives Matter protests, are called into question and condemned.
It has been claimed that Chutkan was exceptionally tough with the rioters on January 6, even though they had no prior arrests; this has led to a number of prominent conservatives calling for Chutkan to recuse herself from the case.
Trump himself has been critical of Chutkan and has suggested that she is motivated by a desire to see him incarcerated.
This effort by Gaetz comes just one day after attorneys for Donald Trump asked that the trial of the former president be postponed until April 2026. This is two years beyond the start date that federal prosecutors requested, which was January.
The legal team for the former president stated that the defense would want additional time to comb through the materials that the Justice Department had spent more than two years compiling.
The legal team expressed their concern that four months would not be sufficient time to review all of the information.
The resolution that was passed on Friday also requested that an investigation be opened on Chutkan by the House Judiciary Committee.
