Kellyanne Conway, a senior Trump aide, reportedly opined on Monday that while the former president may take part in the first Republican primary debate next month, he or she will probably “keep everybody in suspense” in the interim.
“If I were you, I would keep that center podium warm because maybe he’ll make the announcement the day of. You just never know.” Conway said during a Fox News appearance.
“On the one hand, he’s acting like a front-runner. He’s way ahead. What does he have to gain by going?” Conway continued.
“On the other hand, that’s a natural habitat for him. It helped him in that first Fox News debate on Aug. 6, 2015, in Cleveland. He got center stage, he never lost it, became the nominee and indeed the president.” Conway added.
Trump has frequently said he is considering not going to the first Republican primary debate on Aug. 23 in Milwaukee because he still enjoys a significant advantage over the rest of the large GOP field.
Conway recognized Trump’s probable decision-making process but added that the debate stage is a “natural habitat for him.”
Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey, and Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, are two adversaries of Trump who have attempted to increase their pressure on him to participate in the debate in recent weeks
