Will Hurd, a former Republican congressman from Texas, reportedly declared on Thursday that he will run for president in 2024.
Hurd is the first Texan to join the expanding GOP primary field. Hurd is a vocal opponent of former President Donald Trump.
The former congressman discussed illegal immigration and inflation in an announcement video that he posted on Thursday, saying that “Americans deserve better.”
Democrat Rep. Pete Gallego was deposed by Hurd in the 23rd Congressional District of Texas in 2014 by a margin of almost 2 points. In 2016, Hurd defeated Gallego once more, but this time by a margin of just 1.3 points.
Hurd chose not to seek for reelection in 2020 after winning a final time in 2018 by defeating his Democratic opponent 49.2% to 48.7%.
Hurd highlighted his background as an undercover CIA agent, executive business experience working to increase cybersecurity, and time spent in Congress when he served on the House Intelligence Committee.
Hurd joins an already crowded primary field that now has over a dozen declared candidates in it.
