In the growing pool of Republican presidential aspirants, get ready for another unlikely candidate
Two-term North Dakota governor and former CEO of a software business, Doug Burgum, is reportedly set to declare his candidacy for president in Fargo, North Dakota on June 7, according to people familiar with his preparations.
Burgum has been getting ready to start a presidential campaign, and the governor was making TV commercials in anticipation of a White House bid.
Additionally, Burgum had started engaging with political strategists with prior presidential campaign experience in recent weeks.
Additionally, early this spring, Burgum traveled to Iowa, the first state on the Republican presidential nomination calendar.
The governor, who is not well known outside of North Dakota, would be seen as a dark-horse candidate in a field of actual and anticipated 2024 GOP presidential candidates with much higher name recognition, such as the current front-runner former President Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former ambassador and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.
Great Plains Software, Burgum’s former modest startup, grew into a $1 billion software giant. Burgum remained on board as senior vice president after Microsoft finally purchased his company, along with all of its North Dakota-based employees.
