According to statements made by officials on Thursday, a former Democratic mayor of a community in Northern California has now reportedly been sentenced to seven years in jail for engaging in sexual activity with a child who was 14 years old at the time.
According to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, Robert Jacob, 45 years old, the former mayor of Sebastopol in Sonoma County, pleaded no contest to six felony offenses involving sexual misconduct with a minor in January and was found guilty of all of the charges.
District Attorney Carla Rodriguez stated in a news release that the victim should be congratulated for coming forward to report what Mr. Jacob did.
According to the authorities, Jacob first met the victim online in 2020, when the victim was just 14 years old.
During the course of the next year, Jacob maintained contact with the victim, and their chats finally took a sexual turn.
Jacob would email the victim sexual movies and eventually invited the victim to his house in Sebastopol to participate in indecent actions under the premise of completing chores.
According to the prosecution, Jacob also invited another adult male to his house to take advantage of the boy by engaging in sexual activity with him.
The victim, who had just turned 16 at the time he testified in court the previous year, said that he met Jacob on the dating app Grindr and that Jacob was aware that he was underage. This information was originally published by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Jacob pleaded no contest to sexual penetration of a minor procuring a child to engage in a lewd act with another adult, engaging in a lewd act with a minor, communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a sex crime and sending lewd material to a minor.
On Thursday, Jacob was found guilty and given a sentence of seven years in prison, which he immediately began serving.
Upon his release from jail, he will be subject to the obligations of registering as a sex offender in the state of California.
