Rep. George Santos, a Republican from New York, is now the subject of a major investigation, but on Tuesday he reportedly took a step toward perhaps running for reelection to the House of Representatives, where he is currently serving.
The Santos campaign has submitted a statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission for the 2024 election cycle.
This is a move that may indicate that the freshman member intends to seek for reelection in the next election cycle.
In spite of this, there is no assurance that Santos, who has been criticized by members of his own party and is currently the subject of a flurry of investigations, will run for reelection to the United States Congress.
When Santos was elected, it was revealed in the New York Times that he appeared to have invented significant parts of his past in order to gain the position.

He then revealed that during the campaign for office he had lied about his biography in order to get support from voters.
In order for Santos to preserve part of the donations to his campaign that came after the 2022 cycle and to continue fundraising, he was obliged to complete the form by Tuesday’s deadline.
The Federal Election Commission issued a warning to Santos one month ago, stating that he would either need to “disavow” his fundraising operations or make a formal announcement of his candidacy.
Joseph Murray, a lawyer representing Santos’ campaign, was unable to clarify whether or not the congressman was running for reelection when asked about the filing.
