Former New York gubernatorial candidate and Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) reportedly announced on Wednesday the formation of a political action committee to support candidates who will improve Republican turnout among both voters of color and younger voters.
Zeldin’s Leadership American Needs PAC seeks to assist politicians running for office and their outreach to groups such as Millennial and Generation Z voters, as well as communities of color such as Black, Hispanic, and Jewish voters.
The PAC’s chairman will be Zeldin.
Zeldin was defeated by Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) in New York’s gubernatorial election in November, although only by a few percentage points.
The former congressman campaigned hard on the topic of crime, and his success in the governor contest is credited with helping many important New York House districts, particularly on Long Island, turn from blue to red during the 2022 election cycle.
Senator Kirstin Gillibrand (D-NYseat )’s is up for grabs in 2024, and Zeldin has been mentioned as a possible replacement.
The former congressman’s PAC comes as the GOP struggles with younger voters, the majority of whom massively supported Democrats in national House contests in the November midterm elections.
