Democratic strategist James Carville unleashed a profanity-laced tirade Sunday after Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens stunned her own party by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers in the state’s hotly contested Senate race.

Stevens, a Democrat, lost the August Senate primary to progressive Abdul El-Sayed and initially backed him. But just two days before the midterm elections, she switched sides and threw her support behind Rogers, the former congressman and Trump-endorsed GOP nominee.

Carville, the longtime Democratic operative who helped steer Bill Clinton to the White House in 1992, didn’t hold back.

“I think El-Sayed offered her one cheeseburger and Rogers offered her two cheeseburgers, and in the spirit of John Fetterman, s—, gimme another cheeseburger and I’ll give ya my soul!” Carville said on the Politicon YouTube channel.

“I mean, lady, if you’re going to sell your soul, you got to get more for it than a f—ing cheeseburger,” he added.

Carville argued Stevens had ended her future in the Democratic Party, and he went further with a crude insult, warning her that Republicans would view her as “a used condom.”

“You made your bed, sleep in it,” Carville said.

He also took a swipe at Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat who has broken with his party on several high-profile issues, joking that perhaps the two lawmakers should open a cheeseburger restaurant together.

Carville closed with a plea to Democratic viewers to call everyone they know and urge them to vote, telling them to disregard what he called “Haley Stevens’ extra cheeseburger.”

Stevens explained her decision in a video posted to X.

“Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he’s right,” Stevens said. “And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Tensions between Stevens and El-Sayed had been building for weeks. Stevens publicly criticized El-Sayed for declining to say whether Iran or Israel posed the bigger threat. Stevens said the answer was obviously Iran and that it should have been an easy question.

Speaking to Politico, Stevens defended the timing of her switch.

“I went into my heart. I made a decision. I wanted to be honest,” she said. “I’ve done this, you know, in the closing 48 hours. But Abdul is right that I am not welcome or a part of his campaign, even though I endorsed him.”

While Carville fumed, President Trump praised Stevens for having the “bravery” to back Rogers.

The endorsement is a shot in the arm for Rogers, who narrowly lost Michigan’s 2024 Senate race to Democrat Elissa Slotkin and is now running for the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Still, Rogers faces an uphill climb. A New York Times/Siena poll released Sunday showed El-Sayed leading Rogers 53% to 42% among likely voters.

If elected, El-Sayed would be the first Muslim member of the U.S. Senate.
