Megyn Kelly was left stunned by journalist Mark Halperin’s bleak outlook for Republicans in the midterm elections, exclaiming “Oh, good God!” as he laid out just how badly he believes things could go for the GOP.
Halperin had already sounded the alarm last Friday, firing off a warning to Republicans on social media.
Writing in part about President Donald Trump, Halperin said, “The wheels are coming off for a political figure who is swimming against the tide of a Blue tsunami as big as Connecticut.”
On Monday, Halperin appeared on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” where he was asked about the torrent of reaction his warning had set off.
Halperin said his assessment reflects what insiders already know.
“Anyone who has got any sources in Republican politics knows that this is the state of play right now,” Halperin explained.
He said he had invited anyone who disagreed with his assessment to reach out, and 45 Republican strategists have since contacted him. According to Halperin, every one of them either agreed with his reporting or told him he had actually understated how dire the situation is for the party.
“Oh my lord,” Kelly said. “Give it to us straight. How bad is it?”
Halperin stressed that the GOP still holds a financial advantage over Democrats and suggested the president could still change the trajectory of the race.
“The president could start driving messages that are helpful, as opposed to unhelpful messages like, ‘I love data centers,’ and ‘I love AI,'” Halperin said.
“If that happens, maybe things will change, but right now I’d say Democrats will pick up at least 25 House seats, net, and at least six Senate seats, net,” he continued.
“Oh good, God,” Kelly interjected.
“Could be bigger,” Halperin added.
Kelly then pointed to the pushback Halperin had already received from Chris LaCivita, Trump’s 2024 co-campaign manager, over his Friday social media post and a subsequent opinion column.
“That will get you called full of sh*t every time by Chris LaCivita,” Kelly said.
The host went on to underscore just how severe Halperin’s projections would be for Republicans if they come to pass.
“Because those are awful numbers, and now you’re talking about that’s more than a Blue wave,” Kelly said. “That’s a tidal wave.”
