Right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos appeared exhausted and disheveled in a mugshot released after immigration authorities arrested him and placed him in federal custody in Louisiana.
The 41-year-old British national, who previously served as a spokesman for Kanye West, is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Alexandria, Louisiana, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Yiannopoulos appeared unshaven in the photograph released by the agency Friday. His hair was messy, and prominent bags could be seen beneath his eyes as he stared into the camera following his arrest.
Federal officials said Yiannopoulos was taken into custody Thursday because he remained in the United States in violation of the nation’s immigration laws.
According to DHS, Yiannopoulos initially entered the country legally through New York City on May 14, 2019. Officials said he later overstayed his authorized time in the United States and skipped an immigration hearing.
An immigration judge issued a final order of removal against Yiannopoulos on July 22, the agency said.
“Yiannopoulos legally entered the country on May 14, 2019, through New York City, New York,” DHS wrote in a statement announcing his arrest. “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.”
The agency said Yiannopoulos is now being detained in ICE custody in Alexandria. DHS did not provide further details in the post about what will happen next in his immigration case or how long he could remain in custody.
The arrest marks the latest development involving Yiannopoulos, who became known as a combative right-wing political commentator and provocateur. He later worked as a spokesman for West.
The mugshot released by federal officials showed a notably worn-down appearance following the British commentator’s detention. Yiannopoulos looked tired, with an unshaven face, untidy hair and visible bags under his eyes.
DHS emphasized that Yiannopoulos was initially admitted into the United States through legal channels. The agency, however, said his continued presence in the country violated federal law after he overstayed and failed to attend the immigration proceeding.
Officials said the final removal order was issued by an immigration judge before his arrest Thursday. His detention was publicly confirmed by DHS the following day.
Yiannopoulos remains in federal immigration custody in Alexandria as authorities handle the case stemming from his alleged overstay and the removal order issued against him.
The department’s announcement centered on his immigration history, noting both his lawful arrival in New York City in 2019 and his subsequent alleged failure to comply with the nation’s immigration process.
