Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy reportedly faced a hostile reception this week when he addressed a gathering of libertarians, with loud boos from the audience ultimately cutting his speech short and forcing him to leave the stage.
The tense moment unfolded Wednesday evening at the Young Americans for Liberty convention held at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Ramaswamy, who is campaigning to become Ohio’s next governor, had been scheduled to deliver a 30-minute address and was one of the event’s featured speakers. Gun-rights advocate and YouTuber Brandon Herrera, who is running for state office in Texas, was also among the convention’s top headliners.
Instead of receiving a hometown welcome, however, the Cincinnati-born Republican encountered an openly hostile crowd.
Video shared on X showed Ramaswamy about halfway through his remarks when he attempted to make a broader point about generational responsibility.
“The truth of the matter is, you know no matter what happens, whichever direction we go, people of my generation have already made it. We’re gonna be fine,” Ramaswamy told the audience.
As he continued speaking, scattered boos began to swell throughout the room, making it increasingly difficult for him to finish his thought.
“It’s going to be your generation,” he said, struggling to continue as the crowd’s reaction intensified.
The footage cuts shortly afterward, but before it ends, one attendee can be heard shouting directly at the candidate.
“You’re a political freak,” the man yelled. “You need to get the f*ck out of here!”
The crowd responded with a mix of loud cheers and continued boos as Ramaswamy turned away from the podium and exited the stage before completing his scheduled remarks.
The clip, which was posted to X on Friday, quickly spread across social media, amassing more than 2.7 million views.
The incident marks another notable moment in the political career of the 40-year-old entrepreneur, who sought the Republican presidential nomination during the 2024 election cycle before ending his campaign.
Following his White House bid, Ramaswamy was appointed to co-lead the Department of Governmental Efficiency, commonly known as DOGE. The department became well known for aggressively reducing federal spending through significant budget cuts.
Ramaswamy departed DOGE in January 2025. One month later, he officially launched his campaign to succeed Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, who cannot seek another term because of term limits.
DeWine has since endorsed Ramaswamy in the race, providing the gubernatorial hopeful with backing from the outgoing Republican governor.
Even with that endorsement, Ramaswamy has faced political challenges on the campaign trail. A poll released last month found him trailing Democratic candidate Amy Acton in Ohio, a state that has consistently voted Republican in recent election cycles.
The contentious reception at the Young Americans for Liberty convention highlighted the sharp resistance Ramaswamy encountered from an audience that interrupted his remarks with sustained boos, ultimately bringing his appearance to an abrupt end before he could finish his speech.
