Former CNN anchor Don Lemon compared President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again movement to Nazi Germany during a recent podcast appearance, arguing that MAGA represents what he described as the closest modern American equivalent to the Nazi Party while acknowledging one major distinction.
Lemon made the comments during a July 15 interview on the Can’t Be Censored podcast, where he criticized both Trump and his supporters while discussing the administration and its policies.
“MAGA is the closest thing to the modern version of the Nazi Party. This is America’s version,” Lemon said. “It’s the closest thing, without the Holocaust and all that stuff.”
Lemon’s remarks centered on his belief that supporters of the MAGA movement are motivated by issues beyond economic concerns. He argued that many voters backing Trump are driven by White supremacy and a desire to maintain power rather than by policies affecting everyday life.
According to Lemon, people typically reconsider their views when presented with new information that contradicts their previous beliefs.
“Most intelligent people or logical people, when they get new information and that information is negative or not factual, they change their minds,” Lemon said, adding that they are able to “readjust.”
He argued that, in his view, the same does not happen with supporters of Trump.
“No matter how many facts and how much information you give them about this presidency, about the policies, they don’t change their minds,” Lemon said.
Lemon went on to claim that Trump supporters are “really not voting for the price of eggs,” asserting instead that they are motivated by “White supremacy,” power, and the desire to have a “preeminent voice.”
He also argued that Republicans and Trump have convinced supporters that their personal and financial struggles are the result of actions taken by others, including minorities and immigrants.
“They’re afraid of — they’ve been co-opted by many people in the Republican Party and Donald Trump to think their failures are due to something else,” Lemon said before listing Black people, women, Latinos, immigrants, and migrants as examples.
He claimed those supporters have been led to believe those groups are responsible for taking jobs or limiting their financial and career opportunities.
The comments quickly gained traction online after clips from the interview circulated on X on Sunday, drawing widespread attention.
While Lemon’s comparison generated significant discussion, he is not the only prominent liberal figure to invoke comparisons between Trump’s political movement and Nazi Germany in recent months.
According to the report, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker compared Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants last year to Adolf Hitler rounding up Jews and other minorities for death camps.
The article also noted that progressive podcaster Jennifer Welch described the MAGA movement as a “Nazi-style cult” in May.
Lemon’s remarks, however, stood out because he explicitly said the comparison did not include the Holocaust, describing the absence of genocide as the key difference between the two while maintaining that he viewed MAGA as the closest modern American equivalent to the Nazi Party.
