A fresh controversy has erupted around Rep. Eric Swalwell as he pursues a bid for California governor, with a former staffer accusing the congressman of sexual assault—claims he has forcefully denied.
According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, the woman, who worked in Swalwell’s Castro Valley district office for nearly two years, alleged that she had what she described as “sexual encounters” with the congressman while he was her superior. She further claimed that two of those encounters constituted sexual assault, alleging they occurred when she was intoxicated.
The report detailed a series of alleged interactions between the two, including messages sent via Snapchat. The woman claimed Swalwell sent explicit images and requested nude photos in return. She also alleged that he made advances toward her in private settings, including attempting to kiss her while she was driving him home from a donor event.
In another allegation cited by the report, the woman said that during a later car ride, Swalwell exposed himself and requested a sexual act, which she said occurred in a parking lot. The most serious claim described an evening in September 2019, when the woman said she became severely intoxicated after going out for drinks with Swalwell. She stated she later awoke in his hotel bed without memory of the events, but believed intercourse had taken place.
Swalwell responded with a firm denial, calling the allegations false and politically motivated. In a statement to the Chronicle, he emphasized his nearly two decades of public service, both as a prosecutor and a member of Congress, asserting that he has consistently protected women. He suggested the timing of the claims—surfacing as he campaigns for governor—was no coincidence.
His legal team has taken an aggressive stance. Swalwell’s attorney reportedly sent the accuser a cease-and-desist letter, warning of potential legal action if she does not retract her statements. The move signals that the congressman intends to challenge the allegations directly and publicly.
The situation has already had political fallout. According to a report from Politico, several senior members of Swalwell’s campaign leadership resigned in the wake of the accusations, underscoring the seriousness of the moment for a campaign already navigating a competitive race.
