The National Border Patrol Council, representing nearly 20,000 agents, has now reportedly expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s recently unveiled legislative proposal, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
Union President Paul Perez hailed the bill as a transformative investment in the nation’s border security, describing it as a “once in a generation investment” aimed at enhancing safety across the United States.
In remarks to The Daily Wire, Perez emphasized the bill’s comprehensive approach, which not only proposes modifications to the tax code but also allocates substantial funding for the expansion of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations.
“This legislation provides for thousands of new patrol vehicles, the hiring of thousands of additional Border Patrol agents, and improves retention and recruitment by using incentives and protecting benefits,” he stated.
He also highlighted significant investments in physical infrastructure, including improvements to roads along the border.
The proposed funding is expected to support the construction of extensive barriers, including 701 miles of primary wall, 900 miles of river barriers, and 629 miles of secondary barriers, along with the replacement of 141 miles of existing vehicle and pedestrian barriers.
The White House has indicated that the funding will facilitate the annual removal of approximately one million individuals residing in the country illegally and the hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel.
In addition to bolstering the Border Patrol and ICE, the legislation aims to impose a 5% tax on remittances sent out of the country by illegal immigrants and non-citizens.
This measure is intended to deter illegal immigration and disrupt the financial flows to Mexican drug cartels.
Experts, including Ira Mehlman from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, have noted that such a tax could significantly weaken cartel operations by diminishing their revenue streams.
Furthermore, the bill proposes to remove an estimated 1.4 million illegal immigrants from Medicaid, targeting what the Trump administration describes as waste, fraud, and abuse in the system.
The legislation seeks to eliminate benefits for those it claims are exploiting social services.
Support from the Border Patrol Union underscores a growing momentum behind the bill, which aims to address longstanding concerns about border security and immigration policy.
As discussions continue in Congress, the union’s endorsement could play a pivotal role in shaping the legislative landscape surrounding immigration reform.
With the midterm elections approaching, the implications of the “Big Beautiful Bill” extend beyond border security, potentially influencing broader discussions on immigration and public safety.
As stakeholders weigh the benefits and challenges of the proposed measures, the focus will remain on how effectively the legislation can meet the needs of both border enforcement and the communities it aims to protect.
