Former President Barack Obama has reportedly endorsed liberal Judge Susan Crawford in her campaign against conservative candidate Brad Schimel for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Obama emphasized that the election involves critical “fundamental rights” for Wisconsinites.

The outcome of this race will influence the court’s ideological balance, which currently stands at 4-3 in favor of liberal justices.

Obama urged Wisconsin residents and their relatives to recognize the importance of this election, declaring, “There’s only one candidate ready to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of Wisconsinites: Judge Susan Crawford.”

The implications of this race are significant, as it could affect rulings on pivotal issues such as electoral maps, abortion, voter ID laws, and labor union regulations.

In response to Obama’s endorsement, Wisconsin GOP Executive Director Andrew Iverson criticized Crawford, characterizing her as a representative of “out-of-state liberals.”

Iverson asserted, “A vote for Susan Crawford is a vote for a Dangerously Liberal Democrat agenda,” highlighting Schimel’s local support and characterization as a protector of Wisconsin values.

Schimel, who previously served as Wisconsin’s attorney general, has garnered endorsements from over 80 local sheriffs, former President Trump, and various community leaders.

Trump, who officially endorsed Schimel last Friday, urged his supporters to vote early, referring to Crawford as a “Radical Left Democrat” whose policies would threaten traditional values in Wisconsin.

The race, scheduled for April 1, has become notably expensive, with nearly $76 million raised, making it the priciest state Supreme Court election in history.

Wealthy donors, including George Soros, are backing Crawford, while ads from Elon Musk’s America PAC criticize Crawford’s history of leniency in sentencing specific criminal cases.
