On Monday, Brian Kilmeade of Fox News reportedly estimated that the acquisition of Greenland could cost approximately $1.5 trillion.

This estimate was made in response to President-elect Trump’s statement earlier this week that the United States must own the country.

“It’s gonna cost about 1.5 trillion, but [it’ll] probably will pay off,”  Kilmeade said during a new episode of ‘Jesse Watters Prime Time.’

Donald Trump escalated his previous rhetoric regarding the acquisition of Greenland, an autonomous territory that is a part of Denmark, in a Sunday evening statement on Truth Social that announced his nominee to serve as ambassador to Denmark.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump announced in his Truth Social post.

According to reports from The Guardian and the BBC, Greenland’s prime minister declared on Monday that the country is “not for sale” in a statement.

In 2019, Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, a notion that was largely rejected by both experts and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland, an island with a population of approximately 56,000, has the authority to declare independence from Denmark. However, it is heavily reliant on Copenhagen for its financial needs.

The island possesses substantial mineral, hydrocarbon, and natural gas deposits; however, development has been sluggish, and fishing remains a foundational economic activity.

It is also strategically significant to the U.S. military because it is the shortest route from Europe to North America.
