According to a recent survey conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, approximately 20% of Americans are in favor of President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter Biden.
The survey, which was published on Wednesday, was conducted between December 5 and 9 among over 1,200 adults and has a margin of error of 3.7%.
Biden’s decision to pardon his son was endorsed by 22% of the respondents, according to the findings. Hunter Biden was previously awaiting sentencing on tax and gun charges when his father intervened, a measure that he had previously stated he would not take.
Just over 50% of respondents expressed their disapproval of the president’s action, 18% were undecided, and 9% were either unaware or chose to avoid the question altogether.
The majority of Biden’s support is derived from his own party, with 38% of Democrats supporting his decision, as broken down by party lines.
An additional 27% of the cohort expressed their disapproval, while 35% did not express an opinion.
Those percentages decreased among Republicans and Independents, with only 7% and 12% of them approving, respectively.
The clemency is not supported by eight in 10 Republicans, while over 50% of Independents express their disapproval.
Biden characterized the prosecution of his son as a “miscarriage of justice” and politically motivated. Additionally, President-elect Donald Trump had publicly expressed his willingness to grant pardons to the president’s son.
