New York City officials reported that a person of interest in the murder of a UnitedHealth executive was apprehended after being observed at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania after a pursuit that lasted for several days.
The New York City Police Department announced at a news briefing on Monday afternoon that a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pa., approximately 85 miles east of Pittsburgh, observed Luigi Mangione, 26, eating and contacted the authorities on Monday morning.
Arrests were made against him on firearms charges. He was described by authorities as a “strong person of interest” in the murder of UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson.
Police suspect that Mangione traveled from New York after fatally shooting Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning, prior to an investor meeting.
According to a law enforcement official, the suspect inscribed the words “depose,” “deny,” and “delay” on rounds that are suspected to have originated from his firearm. Those terms are frequently linked to the strategies that insurers employ to evade paying claims.
According to the police, Mangione was behaving in a suspicious manner and was in possession of a firearm suppressor, a ghost gun that may have been manufactured using a 3-D printer, and apparel and a mask that were similar to those of the suspect.
Additionally, he possessed a U.S. passport and a number of fraudulent identification cards, including a New Jersey ID that was identical to the one that the perpetrator used to check into a hostel in New York City.
The questioning in Pennsylvania follows days of labor-intensive police work that has involved the scanning of thousands of hours of surveillance footage, the interviewing of witnesses, the tracing down of hundreds of tips, and the gathering of evidence for forensic analysis.
On Friday, the police stated that they were under the impression that the suspect had departed New York via transport.
According to the police, Mangione was born and reared in Maryland and is suspected to have attended college in Pennsylvania.
His most recent known location was Honolulu, and he was associated with San Francisco.
The police are of the opinion that he was operating independently, and they were unaware of his identity prior to Monday. They do not believe that he intended to fled the country.
According to the police, detectives and prosecutors were en route from New York to Altoona to interrogate Mangione.
