Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance shared a firsthand account about the alarming impact of the border crisis.
While addressing supporters in Portage, Michigan, on Friday, Vance urged those present to back former President Donald Trump.
He recounted a “profound” event from earlier this year in Valdosta, Georgia, while speaking to law enforcement on the campaign trail.
One of the most profound and scary things that I’ve ever seen happened on the campaign trail. I was in a place called Valdosta, Georgia,” he told the crowd. “And I was taken by the local sheriffs, the local law enforcement, into what they call the interdiction room.”
In this room, Vance observed an array of illegal items such as marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, and an arsenal of illicit firearms.
“One of the main businesses of the Mexican drug cartels is to bring illegal guns into our country,” Vance explained, drawing a “stark contrast” with Vice President Kamala Harris’s approach to border security and domestic policies that limit American gun ownership.
“Donald Trump wants to empower you to exercise your Second Amendment rights and he wants to go after the illegal gun running of the Mexican drug cartels,” he added.
However, what struck him most was the discovery of drug-laced candy confiscated by Valdosta law enforcement.
“On the table in front of me there is a box of candy, like Nerds, Sour Patch candies,” Vance noted. “Because what the Mexican drug cartels have figured out is that they disguise refined THC and fentanyl as childhood candy, they make it easier to get into our country. They make it easier to traffic into the United States of America.”
