On Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) reportedly declared his opposition to Supreme Court reforms, contradicting President Biden’s reported proposals for more stringent ethics standards and term limits for justices.
Graham informed CBS’s Robert Costa on “Face the Nation” that he will not collaborate with Biden on any reform legislation.
“No, because he wants to destroy the court. They want to pack the court. They want … to undercut the conservative court. They’ve tried to marginalize the court and destroy the Roberts court. The Roberts court has brought constitutional balance back to the court, and the liberals in this country want to pack the court. They want to destroy the court.” Graham said.
“So their initiatives coming from Biden will be dead on arrival in the Senate. They have no desire to make the court better. They’re just trying to make it more liberal.” he continued.
In his Oval Office address last week, Biden declared that Supreme Court ‘reform’ will be a top priority during his final months in office, describing the matter as “critical to our democracy.”
According to reports, the president is currently demanding the implementation of a reform program that would establish term limits for justices and establish a legally enforceable code of ethics.
Public confidence in the high court has reached an all-time low as a result of numerous ethics scandals and politically divisive opinions, prompting a call for reform.
Biden is also contemplating the possibility of advocating for a constitutional amendment that would eradicate the court’s most recent ruling that granted broad immunity for presidents.
