In a move that merges diplomacy with reality television fame, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named British television producer Mark Burnett as his special envoy to the United Kingdom. He will assume a role distinct from the traditional U.S. ambassador to the UK.

Trump described Burnett’s appointment as a “great honor,” highlighting his significant contributions to both media and business. “Mark will focus on enhancing diplomatic relations by fostering trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges between our two nations,” Trump shared via his social media platform.

CBS News writes:

Mark Burnett, the power producer who helped reintroduce President-elect Donald Trump to a national television audience with “The Apprentice,” is being tapped by the president-elect to the newly-created post of special envoy to the United Kingdom in his upcoming administration.

Burnett, who was born in London, helped produce hits like “Survivor” and “The Voice,” but is perhaps best known for teaming up with Trump for “The Apprentice,” which first aired on NBC in 2004.

Trump had been well-known in real estate and pop culture circles for decades. But the show helped again make him a household name — though Trump severed ties with NBC in 2015, the same year he launched his first White House run.

A source familiar with the decision told CBS News that Burnett was originally on the list for consideration as U.S. ambassador to the U.K., but as a dual national, that made the situation complicated. That selection ultimately went to Republican donor Warren Stephens, CEO of investment bank Stephens Inc.

Unlike the U.S. ambassador position, which requires Senate confirmation, the role of special envoy bypasses this process. As a result, Burnett will be able to start his responsibilities as soon as Trump takes office next month.

Burnett, 64, hails from Essex, England, and previously served in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment, noted The BBC. He moved to the United States in 1982, where he built an influential television career producing hit shows such as Survivor and Shark Tank.

Burnett has been an adviser to Trump and played a key role behind the scenes in planning Trump’s 2017 presidential inauguration.

In response to his appointment, Burnett expressed gratitude and pride. “I am truly honored to serve the United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom,” he said in a statement.

Burnett’s personal life also reflects his deep roots in the entertainment industry. He is married to Irish actress Roma Downey, widely recognized for her role in “Touched by an Angel.”
