According to CNN, Brian Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, was struck and killed in New York City early on Wednesday morning in what the authorities are describing as a targeted incident.
A search for the person responsible for the shooting has begun.
The news that Thompson, the CEO of the largest health care organization in the United States, had been gunned down on the streets in what the authorities are calling a targeted attack on Wednesday was announced by John Berman, an anchor for CNN News Central.
Thompson was shot and murdered while he was outside the Hilton hotel.
According to the information provided by correspondent Brynn Gingras, the shooting took place in the middle of Manhattan, in a neighborhood that was not too far from the Rockefeller Center, which was supposed to be the location of the tree lighting later that evening.
According to reports, Thompson was on his way to attend an investor meeting for UnitedHealthcare that was being held in the ballroom of the New York Hilton Midtown.
Outside of the hotel, the suspect was considered to be “waiting for some time” for Thompson.
When he was getting closer to that hotel, the shooter fired shots from a distance of approximately twenty feet away from him.
Investigators were searching that location and retrieving footage from the numerous surveillance cameras that were located in the surrounding region.
Despite being in severe condition, he was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was subsequently categorized as deceased.
After shooting Mr. Thompson multiple times from a distance of only a few feet, the assailant escaped while carrying a gray backpack, a black face mask, and a cream-colored jacket, as reported by the Times.
It appears that the assailant was aware of the door that Mr. Thompson was going to enter.
At this time, there have been no arrests made, and the investigation is still ongoing at this time.
