At a rally supporting Vice President Kamala Harris in Arizona, former President Bill Clinton described Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake as “physically attractive.”
Lake, who narrowly lost the 2022 governor race in the state, is challenging Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego for the Senate seat that independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is vacating.
Clinton began by commenting on how voters perceive Harris as someone who “just showed up” following President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for re-election.
“About 45% of the people think he can do no wrong, and they don’t care if we save our democracy or not,” he said about Trump. “So there is a sliver there that has to make up their mind. And to them, Kamala Harris just showed up.”
“I mean, she was there as vice president, and what they think of her largely depends on what they think of President Biden,” he added.
“But she is extremely vulnerable, more vulnerable than she deserves to be, through crazy attacks.”
During the event, Clinton pivoted to the race between Lake and Gallego.
“You got a person that grew up under sometimes challenging circumstances, who made something of his life running against someone who is physically attractive, but believes that politics is a performance art,” he said about Lake.
In response to Clinton’s remarks about her appearance, Lake, 55, had a brutal comeback.
“As a middle-aged woman, I’m flattered,” she clapped back at a rally Trump held at Arizona State University in Tempe. “I thought I was a little too old for him. Doesn’t he like interns?”
