On Tuesday night, vice presidential nominee JD Vance slammed his opponent Tim Walz for Minnesota laws that no longer safeguard infants who survive abortions.
Walz, in his capacity as governor of Minnesota, repealed a bipartisan measure that previously mandated that physicians report whether abortions resulted in the live birth of a baby, the measures taken to preserve the baby’s life, and the baby’s survival. Vance pointed this out.
The state’s requirement to take measures to preserve the baby’s “life and health” was also removed by Walz’s action, which was replaced with a requirement for “care.”
“That is fundamentally barbaric,” Vance said to Walz during the debate.

State health department data indicates that physicians conducted five abortions that resulted in a live birth between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, in accordance with the state’s previous abortion reporting requirements.
Only eight states publicly disclose or respond to requests for statistics on babies who were born alive during abortion procedures: Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Texas.
