On Monday, a conservative legal firm reportedly initiated an inquiry into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s “extensive, multi-decade” connections to China, which are related to the vice presidential candidate.
According to Freedom of Information Act requests the America First Legal Foundation requested documents from the Minnesota governor’s office, the FBI, and the Justice Department regarding Walz’s connections to China.
“Now that he is the official Democrat nominee for Vice President of the United States, Gov. Walz will receive classified national security briefings. If there is reason to believe that Gov. Walz is, willingly or unwillingly, an asset of a foreign communist power, then the American people have a right to be informed of all available information before they cast their ballots in November.” an AFL lawyer wrote in a new letter to the FBI.
The firm stated that Walz’s professional and academic affiliations with China, as well as his numerous visits to the country, could have significant national security implications.
Since Vice President Kamala Harris selected the governor as her running colleague, Walz’s relationship has been the subject of scrutiny.
Walz has visited China at least 30 times since the 1980s and was a fellow at China’s Macao Polytechnic University while in Congress.
The university is known for its emphasis on “devotion to and love for the motherland.” Republicans on the House Oversight Committee initiated an inquiry into Walz’s affiliation with China in August.
James Comer, the Oversight Chair, stated earlier this month that the FBI has thus far failed to respond to his inquiries for information.
AFL requested all documents that pertain to the “Confucius Institutes” sponsored by the CCP or any correspondence with the Beijing Genomics Institute, the Ministry of Education, or members of the CCP in its request to the governor’s office.
Additionally, AFL requested communications regarding China from the Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota.
