Commissioner of NYPD Forced to Resign Amidst Federal Criminal Probe

Commissioner Edward Caban of the New York Police Department reportedly resigned from his position as the chief of the world’s largest police department on Thursday.

“My complete focus has always been on the NYPD – the department and people I love and have dedicated over 30 years of service to. However, the news around recent developments has created a distraction for our department, and I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD.” Caban announced in a statement.

This decision was made in response to the seizure of his phone by federal agents in a criminal investigation eight days prior.

The investigation is reportedly in part focused on a nightclub security business owned by Caban’s identical brother, James Caban, and whether he utilized his brother to “resolve potential issues for clubs and bars.”

It is also reported that the investigation is also targeting other police officers.

Criminal investigations are being conducted by the IRS and the Southern District of New York, which concentrates on government corruption cases.

A number of individuals in the vicinity of New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently under criminal investigation for potential malfeasance related to actions involving the Turkish government, have recently been subjected to criminal investigations.

Last week, the FBI executed search warrants at the residence of Philip Banks, the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, and a residence that is shared by schools Chancellor David Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.

Investigators confiscated the phones of Timothy Pearson, a senior adviser to the mayor, and Caban.

The search also included Terence Banks, a consultant who is the sibling of Philip Banks and David Banks.

As part of a criminal investigation conducted by the Eastern District of New York, the federal government conducted a search on the residence of Winnie Greco, Adams’ director of Asian Affairs, earlier this year, according to the Times.

Several donors to Adams’ campaign have also been accused in a straw-donor scheme, and his former buildings commissioner, Eric Ulrich, is facing bribery charges.
