For the second time in a couple weeks, Kamala Harris’ campaign has been involved in a car wreck. Several vehicles in Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s motorcade were involved in a collision Monday while the Democratic vice presidential nominee was traveling to a campaign event in Milwaukee.
The crash resulted in injuries to a staff member and several reporters, though Governor Walz’s car was not directly involved and continued on to the event.
The Hill writes that Vice President Harris’s running mate kicked off the Labor Day holiday by meeting with local leaders in Minnesota. His motorcade was traveling to Wisconsin, where he is scheduled to deliver remarks at the Milwaukee Area Labor Council’s Laborfest.
Other reporters traveling with the governor reportedly suffered scrapes and bruises, and another was feared to have a concussion. The Hill has reached out to the campaign for further details.
After the stoppage, reporters and staffers were then loaded into new vans, and continued en route to the Walz event, according to the pool. The cause of the crash was unclear.
Biden called Walz from his cabin on Air Force One to check in after the reported crash. Harris also called to check in.
Last week, Harris and Walz had their motorcade delayed after it was involved in a crash in Georgia. America’s New Brief reported that “the incident took place during Harris and Walz’s two-day bus tour of the state, which included a visit to Savannah State University, the oldest public historically Black university in Georgia. A pool report from the scene described a person lying on the pavement with visible blood nearby, indicating possible injuries. Another individual, likely a fellow officer, was seen assisting the injured person. The severity of the injuries is currently unknown.
Preliminary accounts said the motorcycle may have lost control rather than collided with another object. The motorcade was paused for approximately three minutes before resuming, leaving behind a large white bus from the procession on the side of the highway.”
In 2022, the vice president’s Secret Service driver was involved in a different auto accident, but was allowed to stay on the job.
Other members of the press corps sustained minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, with one reporter feared to have suffered a concussion. The precise cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
In the immediate aftermath of the collision, those injured were attended to, and the remaining reporters and staffers were transferred to new vehicles to continue the journey to Milwaukee. The campaign has not yet provided additional details on the condition of those involved.
The motorcade’s accident adds a dramatic note to what was otherwise intended to be a routine campaign stop. Governor Walz had started the Labor Day holiday by meeting with local leaders in Minnesota before heading to Wisconsin, a key battleground state, where he was expected to rally support at the Laborfest event.
Following the accident, President Joe Biden reached out to Walz from Air Force One to check on the governor’s well-being. Vice President Harris also contacted Walz to ensure that he was safe and uninjured.
As Governor Walz proceeded with his planned event in Milwaukee, Vice President Harris was set to participate in a separate campaign event with President Biden in Pittsburgh. The Labor Day events mark a critical period in the final stretch of the campaign, with both tickets intensifying their efforts to connect with voters in crucial swing states.
