Bernie Moreno, a Republican candidate for the Ohio Senate, stated on Sunday that he is now in favor of “common-sense restrictions” on abortion at the federal level after 15 weeks. However, he also believes that the issue should be “mostly” left to the states to determine, a stance which marked a major evolution on the hot button issue for him.
In an interview on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday” with Chris Stirewalt, Moreno shared his thoughts on his changing stance on abortion.
“My position on abortion is crystal clear. I am personally pro-life. I think we have freedom of religion in America, so we should be able to have our own personal religious beliefs,”Moreno said.
“I also believe that this is mostly an issue for the states, and that’s what President Trump has talked about. That’s what Dobbs did,” he continued.
Stirewalt pointed out that in 2022, Moreno firmly identified himself as someone who supports the pro-life stance without any exceptions.
In the GOP primary earlier this year, he voiced his disagreement with a fellow candidate who opposed a bill that prohibited abortion at around six weeks, with only a few exceptions.
Moreno, on the other hand, has now fully embraced the GOP national platform, which does not officially support a federal abortion ban. On the contrary, it now emphasizes the importance of states having the authority to establish their own abortion laws.
