In a recent interview with The Detroit News, United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain voiced his concerns regarding the labor stances of two Democratic politicians being considered as potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Speaking with The Detroit News, Fain specifically pointed out troubling labor-related positions held by Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Kelly did not initially support the Protecting the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act), legislation designed to bolster collective bargaining rights. Although Kelly eventually endorsed the PRO Act, his delayed support remains a concern for labor advocates.
Shapiro’s backing of school vouchers, which divert public funds to private schools, also raises red flags for the UAW, Fain said before falling back on to his typical talking points against Republicans.
Fain told the newspaper that UAW has urged Harris to pick either Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear or Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Both governors have demonstrated strong support for labor and working-class issues, he claimed, making them favorable choices in the eyes of the UAW. Fain particularly praised Beshear, describing him as the best candidate for the union due to his consistent advocacy for labor rights.
Despite some reservations, however, Fain said the UAW will fully support Kamala Harris for president. “At the end of the day, we have to defeat Donald Trump,” the UAW leader said. “Another Donald Trump presidency would be a complete disaster for this country and for working-class people in this country.”
The News noted that Trump and Fain have not seen eye to eye, with the former president calling for the UAW president to be fired, claiming that China has begun building auto plants across the southern border in Mexico and holds plans to sell Mexican-assembled vehicles in the United States.
“The United Auto Workers ought to be ashamed for allowing this to happen,” Trump said at the GOP convention last month. “And the leader of the United Auto Workers should be fired immediately. And every single auto worker, union and non-union, should be voting for Donald Trump.”
Fan has come under investigation recently for corruption. New Conservative Post reported that “elected in 2023, Shawn Fain the president of the United Auto Workers union, has served as a leftwing apparatchik the Joe Biden, trying to help him undermine Donald Trump’s growing appeal with union workers….now Fain is facing in investigation for abusing his power.”
