Democrats need to do better in order to win back working class voters before November, according to Katie Couric, who cautioned them that they had somehow managed to lose the key demographic group.
On the Hysteria podcast, Couric—a veteran journalist who has worked for networks like NBC and CBS—joined Alyssa Mastromonaco to talk about the presidential contest between presumed Democratic contender Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance.
Couric stated that Democrats should go beyond simply criticizing Republicans, while mentioning how many Democrats have used the term “weird” as a criticism for Trump and Vance.
“Two things can be true, right? You can think that their behavior and their rhetoric is weird, but you can also do a better job of reaching out to disaffected voters,” Couric said.
The reporter claimed that she has never seen the Republican Party win over more “working class” voters in her life.
“I think that there needs to be a greater connection between the working class and the Democratic Party because, let’s face it, Alyssa, the Democrats have kind of lost the working class. And it was never that way during all my years of covering politics. You had the head of the Teamsters at the RNC, you have people buying into this notion that Republicans care about dinner table issues much more than Democrats. And these narratives, I think, have become too deeply entrenched about liberal college-educated elites who are condescending.” she continued.
After Hillary Clinton notoriously referred to Trump and his supporters as a “basket of deplorables” in her criticism of them, Couric said she started to see the trend.
“I just want to see her with a welding hat on, working with regular Joes,” Couric said of Harris and her ongoing presidential campaign.
