In a new survey, only 33% of Democrats expressed satisfaction with President Biden as their party’s choice, whereas over 70% of Republicans expressed the same sentiment regarding the outgoing President Trump.
Prior to Saturday’s attempted assassination attempt on Trump, an NBC News survey revealed that 33% of Democrats were happy with Biden’s nomination, while 62% of party members would have preferred a different candidate.
Five percent expressed uncertainty.
With 71 percent of Republicans saying they are happy with Trump as the nominee and 27 percent saying they would have preferred someone else, Trump did far better with GOP participants. Two percent expressed uncertainty.
The results come after a turbulent few weeks for Biden, who is under growing pressure to withdraw from the 2024 contest after a poor showing in the debate toward the end of last month, even from members of his own party.
Although he has admitted to doing poorly in the debate, Biden is adamant that he will continue to run and beat Trump in November.
According to a majority of respondents (71%) to the NBC News poll, the debate had no discernible effect on their preferred voting strategy.
Five percent said they would be more inclined to support Biden, while twenty-two percent said they would be more inclined to support Trump.
From July 7 to July 9, the poll revealed that Trump had a 2-point advantage over Biden, with 43% of respondents supporting him compared to 45%.
This had the same margin as the poll from April, when Trump had a 46 percent to 44 percent support lead. It was also within the poll’s error margin of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
In a fight among six candidates, the gap remains relatively constant, with Trump leading Biden by three points, or 40% to 37%.
Monday marked the start of the Republican National Convention, when delegates are expected to select Trump as their party’s official nominee.
On the first day of the convention, Trump is set to announce his choice for vice president before making remarks on Thursday night.
