Several Democrats have asked—begged—Biden to step aside in hopes of avoiding a defeat this November, but one member of the House has upped the ante.
She wants Joe Biden to resign.
A congresswoman from Washington has crossed a line that no other member of her party has dared near, writes Mediate.
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) became the first Democrat on Capitol Hill to call on President Joe Biden to not only drop out of the presidential race, but to resign from office on Thursday, .
“I’ve spent the past two weeks listening to my constituents express their concerns about the President’s age and health. Like most people I represent in Southwest Washington, I doubt the President’s judgement about his health, his fitness to do the job, and whether he is the one making important decisions about our country, rather than unelected advisors,” said Gluesenkamp Perez in a statement. “Americans deserve to feel their president is fit enough to do the job. The crisis of confidence in the President’s leadership needs to come to an end. The President should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first.”
Earlier this month, the first-term congresswoman observed that “about 50 million Americans tuned in and watched that debate. I was one of them for about five very painful minutes.”
“We all saw what we saw, you can’t undo that, and the truth I think, is that Biden is going to lose to Trump,” she added. “I know that’s difficult, but I think the damage has been done by that debate.”
Biden has repeatedly stated that he is unwavering in his stance that he will be the Democratic nominee in November.
Perez’s remarks came shortly before the president’s scheduled press conference in which he aimed to dispel concerns about his physical and mental suitability for the White House.
He opened the conference by accidentally introducing Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy as Vladimir Putin.
He also referred to Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump.”
On Thursday around noon, House Democrats left Capitol Hill to head back to their districts for a week-long recess.
Earlier, progressive legislators gathered throughout the week, both as a full caucus and in smaller meetings, to strategize on the next steps for Biden, according to Fox News.
