According to a new CNN poll released on Tuesday, 75% of people think Democrats have a better chance of winning the 2024 election with a different candidate than President Biden.

Some Democrats and allies expressed concern after watching Biden’s first debate performance, as the president found it difficult to connect ideas or refute the numerous false claims made by former President Trump.

Opponents of the president have suggested that Vice President Harris or another rising Democratic star take his place on the party’s presidential ticket.

The poll found that 56% of Democrats and left-leaning independents believed the party would have a higher chance of winning in November without Biden.

In a head-to-head comparison, Trump leads Biden nationally by 6 points, the same margin as in the CNN poll from April.

The first member of Congress to openly urge Biden to halt his candidacy is Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), who made the announcement on Tuesday. The president is also under pressure from funders to modify his campaign.

Voters were also asked about possible Biden successors in the CNN poll. Harris performed the best, falling short of Trump by just 2 points, within the error margin.

In polls, a number of other well-known Democrats performed better than Biden, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Governor Gavin Newsom of California, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.

Any idea that the president might withdraw from the 2024 contest has been swiftly refuted by the Biden team.
